Skin for all is the product of months of tireless and extensive research to ensure users get the best out of their experience.

the sources and citations used were picked to be informative, recent, comprehensive and useful to both students and the public

THE RESEARCH PROCESS

  • Site selection:

    • I used 6 different sites to determine the most common conditions that affect patients.

    • The sites used include both patient and clinician- focused material:

      • Global Skin Disease Morbidity and Mortality: Update from the Global Burden of Disease

      • Epidemiology and Management of Common Skin Diseases in Children in Developing Countries

      • The Burden of Skin and Subcutaneous Diseases: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study

      • National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases: Skin Diseases

      • Skin, hair and nails: NHS inform

      • MIND THE GAP BY MALONE MUKWENDE

  • I believe this is important as representation within commonly seen conditions will not only prepare students for clinical placements, but it will ensure patients are seen and felt supported if they suspect they have the conditions seen or have been diagnosed.

  • The sites used also cover the multiple, international populations that may use this website, so studies and reports from developing, and developed countries were chosen.

  • Conditions that focus on dermatological manifestations were focused on however, more systemic conditions such as Gonorrhoea, Syphilis and Chlamydia were also recognised due to their abundance and importance in the sphere of public health and medical knowledge.

  • Image selection:

    • I decided to use 10 images to give a comprehensive overview of what the conditions look like on a range of skin types/ tones

    • The images also vary in severity to highlight the range in presentations and manifestations that can be seen in these common clinical conditions

Stages of the website

  • Phase 1

  • Find dermatological conditions which commonly affect patients

  • Find images (x10) for each condition

  • Describe the condition with key words and points

  • Phase 2

  • Create a profile for each condition (bond indicates difference in patients and medical students)

    • Description of the condition

    • Epidemiology

    • Pathophysiology

    • Causes

    • Risk factors

    • Presentations

    • Investigations

    • Management

    • Complications

    • Questions to ask your doctor

    • Support with the condition

  • Disclaimer page description

  • Phase 3

  • Methodology page

  • About us page

  • Phase 4

  • Implementing profiles on website

  • Collect reviews from focus groups
